You Can't Stay Here

from Honky-Tonk Opera by Railtown

about

Pam O'Daniel and I wrote this during a couple sessions at her place back in 1996 . . . I used to use it to close shows early on when I was playing out with The Big Dogs . . . It was, after all, an attempt to write an end-of-the-night song for the honky-tonks . . . It was a lot of fun to write. My title, collaborated on both lyrics and music . . . Pam plays piano, so that's a different approach to writing style . . .

lyrics

YOU CAN'T STAY HERE

I've been singin' to you since nine o'clock tonight
Playin' old favorites and the new ones that you like
If you're feelin' kind and you wanna tip the band
Give until it hurts - put it in the can
This is gonna be our last tune
So if you're gonna get lucky, well, you'd better get it soon

We'll be here tomorrow
Come see us again
If you've had a good time
Next time bring a friend
Thank you everyone
We've had a lot of fun
Now it's time to finish up your beer
You don't have to go home . . .
but you can't stay here

Don't forget your waitress, give it up before you go
She's been good to you, she told you all her jokes
The man behind the bar wants to see his wife
He's lookin' more than ready to be callin' it a night
Give your best wishes to the bouncer at the door
Make your last promise - you won't bother him no more

We'll be here tomorrow
Come see us again
If you've had a good time
Next time bring a friend
Thank you everyone
We've had a lot of fun
Now it's time to finish up your beer
You don't have to go home . . .
but you can't stay here

We'll be here tomorrow
Come see us again
If you've had a good time
Next time bring a friend
Thank you everyone
We've had a lot of fun
Now it's time to finish up your beer
You don't have to go home . . .
but you can't stay here

You don't have to go home . . .
but you can't stay here
