about

I wrote this one with my friend and co-writer Julianne Sutton back in the late nineties - when we both still lived in Nashville. She actually sang back-up with The Big Dogs early on . . .

Musically, it's kind of a mix between Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen.

There was some discussion of making it a typical, positive happy ending, power to women song . . . I think it's more honest, and in the end, more empowering to tell the story of how things go so very wrong, so very often.

I hope to "wake" some women up, shake them up, and encourage them to get help before it's too late!

lyrics

THIS TIME

Susie showed up at our door sometimes late at night
Make-up runnin', eyes swollen from the tears she'd cried
No place else to go
She’d say he lost control
And she was closer than the demons he was tryin’ to fight

This time she's leavin' him forever
This time she saw the light
Finally, she’s gone to find better
Now that he crossed the line
She's never goin' back this time

In the mornin' she‘d stare into her coffee cup
Mumblin' somethin' 'bout how she'd really had enough
Then he’d call on the phone
And beg her to come home
She’d say 'no', but she’d be cryin' when she hung up

This time she's leavin' him forever
This time she saw the light
Finally, she’s gone to find better
Now that he crossed the line
She's never goin' back this time

This time he went too far
A bullet to her heart
She thought she’d save him with her love
- He killed her in cold blood

This time she's leavin' him forever
This time she saw the light
Finally, she’s gone to find better
Now that he crossed the line
She's never goin' back
She's never goin' back
She's never goin' back
. . . this time
