about

Written with my friend and co-writer Bill Warrington back in 2003 at my apartment in Nashville.

This was recorded in the same apartment. I'm using guitar here, and I usually perform this song on tenor banjo now. I think the tenor banjo lends a time-frame appropriate sound to the song . . . although, I must say, I always love guitar!

I may end up using piano eventually! I love arranging these songs!

lyrics

SPEAKIN’ EASY

He pulled up in a brand new Packard
With his buddy and his best gal
Found the door in that dark back alley
He knocked three times and they let ‘em in . . .

The crowd kept dancin’ and downin’ their booze
Speakin’ easy, as if they had nothin’ to lose

While the couple were happy flappin’
Their friend took chances with lady luck
Caught outnumbered, accused of cheatin’
- A backroom trial at the butt of a gun

The crowd kept dancin’ and downin’ their booze
Speakin’ easy, as if they had nothin’ to lose

A funny feelin’ made him start searchin’
He found his friend in a pool of blood
Told at gunpoint - forget it happened
He chose to live and he slipped away

The crowd kept dancin’ and downin’ their booze
Speakin’ easy, as if they had nothin’ to lose

Speakin’ easy
Speakin’ easy
