about

Written while I was, well, waiting for my car "on the old side of the town where I grew up". (On "the Avenue" for those of you "in the know".)

Yep. It's just what it says it is . . . a 'simple thing'.

- Jeffrey Scott Stewart

lyrics

SIMPLE THINGS

On a cold grey winter’s morning
On the old side of the town where I grew up
I stood with eyes wide open
Noticing the things that always are; but just the same, are seldom seen

The firemen were jogging
Back and forth in front of station number one
While the elder generation
Walking arm in arm passed slowly by; and took the time to smile back at me

I was pacing ‘round in circles
‘Cause I guess I thought that this was wasting time
Am I falling out of touch now
With the simple things in life?

At the fire station,
Children came to see their heroes’ home away from home
They were filled with an excitement
Anticipating all the possibilities of this new day

Still pacing ‘round in circles
I was wondering if they might be wasting time
Or were they just in touch now
With the simple things in life?

I talked about the weather
With a man who stood there waiting – like me –
Waiting for his car, so he could drive away
From a cold grey winter’s morning
On the old side of the town where I grew up
