about

I wrote this tune 'pre-Nashville', and then, as with a lot of other 'pre-Nashville' tunes, re-wrote it some after moving to 'Music City'. They say that "writing is re-writing" . . . and in the same way as I treat my albums, I consider songs to be "open for improvement" . . . if I think of a better version, I'll use it!

Here, a 'naughty' guy seems to be visiting his old flame's dressing room just before she enters a church to get married. He 'confesses' his strong feelings for her before relenting to the crowd that is waiting inside the church . . . and finally we learn that HE is the groom! Hey, I'm not afraid to be 'cute' and 'sweet'. I like the twist.

CHURCH BELLS

I hear the church bells ringing, but honey don't you go
Stay here for a minute, and let me hold you close
I know this isn't right on your wedding day
I know I shouldn't be seeing you this way
And I hear the church bells ringing, but honey don't you go

Church bells are ringing, but I've just got to say
Remember when you're saying your wedding vows
that you're the only woman I'll ever love this way
- I hope that you're happy now

I remember when I met you just like yesterday
Those old feelings now they come back or never went away
I feel a spark between us - don't let it disappear
We'll never be the same when we walk out of here
I remember when I met you just like yesterday

Church bells are ringing, but I've just got to say
Remember when you're saying your wedding vows
that you're the only woman I'll ever love this way
- I hope that you're happy now

We're keeping people waiting, just give me one more hug
I'd better let you go now, I guess our time is up
I had to have a minute alone with you
I'll see you at the alter when we say we do
We're keeping people waiting, just give me one more hug

Church bells are ringing, but I've just got to say
Remember when you're saying your wedding vows
that you're the only woman I'll ever love this way
- I hope that you're happy now
- I hope that you're happy now
