about

This is one of me and Big Al's earlier songs together . . . before we started writing together over at the Polygram offices (Al was signed to Polygram, partly he said because of the strength of our song "Help Yourself to Me"). Written at my apartment in Nashville back in 1997. As was usual, Al brought the title and the music is mine. I came up with the chorus in the middle of the night, and I still remember how good I felt about it at the time (and I still do actually - one of my more poetic moments!)

lyrics

SHOW ME WHERE IT HURTS

I understand your hesitation
It's hard for you to share right now
Even though it's unspoken
I know your heart's been broken
And I want to chase away your doubts

If love's a river of pure emotion
You're like a dam about to burst
You've tried to hide your pain
And only made it worse
I know I can make you feel better
If you'll only trust me first
Open up your heart
Show me where it hurts

I could learn by demonstration
Teach me how to treat you right
As long as we star together
Our love will last forever
We'll get there, if you'll be my guide

If love's a river of pure emotion
You're like a dam about to burst
You've tried to hide your pain
And only made it worse
I know I can make you feel better
If you'll only trust me first
Open up your heart
Show me where it hurts

You're only human I realize
Heartaches take time to heal
I'm just a man, and I'm asking you
To let me know how you feel

If love's a river of pure emotion
You're like a dam about to burst
You've tried to hide your pain
And only made it worse
I know I can make you feel better
If you'll only trust me first
Open up your heart
Show me where it hurts

Open up your heart
Show me where it hurts
