Honey, Don't You Dare

from Honky-Tonk Opera by Railtown

about

This is among the many songs that I've written alone . . . Originally written in November of 1992, with rewrites in 6/3/94 and 4/23/2002 . . . sometimes those rewrites come in handy! Sometimes it just takes a while to get a song to 'percolate' to where it needs to be . . . In this case it needed to be trimmed down . . .

This was on a demo EP that I did years ago (before the rewrites) . . . I hate when that happens! . . . We made a great-sounding recording of the song, ('we' being a guy named Tim who did great demos out in California . . .) only to realize that the song needed to be rewritten. Thankfully, the lyrics are not autobiographical!

lyrics

HONEY, DON'T YOU DARE

Honey, don't you dare complain
'bout how he's caused you pain
and now you know you should have stayed with me

I could've told you way back then
you and he would end
before too long I knew that he would set you free

Honey, don't you dare come cryin' at my doorstep
hopin' it'll make me weak
Just because he left you feelin' sad and lonely
you think you'll come back to me
Well I know that it's a game and I've heard the sayin'
"all in love is fair"
But don't tell me your sad, sad story
Honey, don't you dare

You're wonderin' if your heart will heal
Well I know how you fell
I've felt the same way once or twice not long ago

You told me that you had to leave
So now I can't believe
You have the nerve to say you want to come back home

Honey, don't you dare come cryin' at my doorstep
hopin' it'll make me weak
Just because he left you feelin' sad and lonely
you think you'll come back to me
Well I know that it's a game and I've heard the sayin'
"all in love is fair"
But don't tell me your sad, sad story
Honey, don't you dare

Honey, don't you dare come cryin' at my doorstep
hopin' it'll make me weak
Just because he left you feelin' sad and lonely
you think you'll come back to me
Well I know that it's a game and I've heard the sayin'
"all in love is fair"
But don't tell me your sad, sad story
Honey, don't you dare
