Dreamin' Too Long

about

I wrote this song back in the early '80s I believe. It's one from the heart, as they say.

I think the song is reflected well by a fortune I got in a fortune cookie once that said, "A man may fail many times, but he is never a failure unless he stops trying." I like that.

I once believed that I was destined to be 'famous' and 'successful', that it was my inevitable destiny. It gradually became disappointing that it didn't happen "soon enough" . . . but I wasn't about to give up. That's the point at which this song was 'born'. BTW . . . NOW, I've learned to enjoy the life that I DO have . . . Life isn't about reaching some 'goal', it's about REACHING.

This song lived most of it's 'life' as a slow roll on the guitar, until I got a ukelele and tried it that way, with an added harmonica. That's my favorite arrangement.

lyrics

DREAMIN' TOO LONG

I guess I'm not as smart as I thought
or I'd be livin' in a big ol' house
and ridin' in a limousine
- I guess it's not that easy

I guess I'll never be a movie star
I'll never make the girls go wild
or see my name in lights
- I guess that's alright

I've been dreamin' too long
I've been dreamin' too long
I've believed somehow that I was glory bound
I've been dreamin' too long

I guess that I've been hopin' for too much
I never counted on an average life
I've been waiting for my destiny
to come along and save me

I've been dreamin' too long
I've been dreamin' too long
I've believed somehow that I was glory bound
I've been dreamin' too long
- to give up now
